Sudakov, Ilya Yakovleivich

Sudakov, Ilya Yakovleivich (1890–1969), Soviet actor and director, who trained at the Moscow Art Theatre where, under Stanislavsky's supervision, he directed Bulgakov's Days of the Turbins (1926) and Ivanov's Armoured Train 14–69 (1927) and together with Nemirovich-Danchenko staged Ivanov's Blockade (1929), Afinogenov's Fear (1935), and Trenev's Lyubov Yarovaya (1936). In 1937 he became Artistic Director of the Maly Theatre, where some of his best productions were Gutzkow's Uriel Acosta (1940), Invasion (1942) by Leonov, and Front (1943) by Korneichuk. Among his post-war productions were revivals of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya (1947), Afino-genov's Mother of Her Children (1954), and Alexei Tolstoy's The Road to Calvary (1957). In 1959 he became Director of the Gogol Theatre (formerly the Moscow Transport Theatre), where he remained until his death.
