Stranitzky, Joseph Anton

Stranitzky, Joseph Anton (1676–1726), Austrian actor, associated with the comic figure Hanswurst. He began his theatrical career with a travelling puppet-show and in about 1705 arrived in Vienna, where he headed a company of ‘German Comedians’ modelled on the lines of the English Comedians. They played at the Ballhaus from 1707 and in 1711 he took over the newly built Kärntnertortheater, making it the first permanent home of German-language comedy. For this company Stranitzky adapted old plays and opera librettos, making Hanswurst (a role which he bequeathed to Prehauser) the central comic character.
