Steinbeck, John Ernst (1902–68), American novelist, awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. He adapted for the stage two of his own novels, already dramatic both in structure and dialogue—
Of Mice and Men (1937; London, 1939), a realistic picture of itinerant farm labour and of a feeble-minded farmhand; and
The Moon is Down (1942; London, 1943), portraying the occupation by the Germans of a peaceful town, and its resistance movement, which was more favourably received in Europe than in America. Dramatized by other hands were
Tortilla Flat in 1938 and
Burning Bright in 1950.
