Stein, Peter (1937– ), German director of world renown. He worked initially in Munich, Bremen, and Zürich, his early work including Edward Bond's Saved (1967) and a politically provocative staging of Weiss's Vietnam Discourse (1968). He moved to the Schaubühne, Berlin, as Artistic Director, 1970–85, making his début there with Brecht's adaptation of Gorky's novel The Mother, which was followed by such notable productions as Ibsen's Peer Gynt (1971), Gorky's Summerfolk (1973), and Aeschylus' Oresteia (1980). A realist with a preference for ensemble acting, he was especially praised for his interpretations of Chekhov's Three Sisters (1984) and The Cherry Orchard (1989) and Racine's Phèdre (1987). His Expressionist production of O'Neill's The Hairy Ape was seen at the National Theatre in London in 1987. He makes an annual return to the Schaubühne, and also directs opera.
