Staberl

Staberl, Austrian stock comic character, the umbrella-maker Chrysostomos Staberl, played by Ignaz Schuster in Bürger von Wien (1813) by Adolf Bäuerle (1786–1859) with such success that he became a household word and appeared in some 25 sequels by various hands, including four more by Bäuerle. He marks the transition from such imported clowns as Hanswurst and Kasperle to native comedy, and was instantly recognizable as an archetypal Viennese working-class character, genial and shrewd, but something of a grouser and layabout.
