Smith, Sol(omon) Franklin (1801–69), pioneer of the American theatre on the frontier. After a hard childhood he ran away from home to become an actor, travelling with the
Drakes and other itinerant companies. In 1835 Smith went into partnership with Noah
Ludlow, and together they prospered, dominating theatrical activity in the South and West and building in St Louis the first permanent theatre west of the Mississippi. Smith, who later appeared as a guest artist at the
Park Theatre in New York and also in Philadelphia, was an excellent low comedian, excelling in such parts as Mawworm in
Bickerstaffe's The Hypocrite. His son
Marc(us) (1829–74) was also on the stage, specializing in Old Comedy with Lester
Wallack and Mrs John
Wood, and being well received in London. He made his last appearance at the
Union Square Theatre in Hart Jackson's adaptation of a French play,
One Hundred Years Old, in 1873.
