Shubert, Lee (1875–1953),
Sam S. (1876–1905),
and Jacob J. (1880–1963), three brothers, American theatre owners and producers. Sam died in a railway accident, but the others continued to prosper and by 1916, having broken the monopoly of the
Theatrical Syndicate, controlled most of the theatres in New York and the principal cities of the United States. They also established themselves in London in the 1920s, but withdrew in 1931. In the 1950s the US government took legal action against them because of their monopoly, and in 1956 they were forced to relinquish some of their theatres. The Shubert Organization is now responsible for the operation and management of 17 theatres in New York, including the
Shubert, the
Winter Garden, the
Broadway, the
Ethel Barrymore, the
Plymouth, and the Lyceum, and several theatres in other cities. Whilst most of its productions have been musicals, it also stages straight productions such as
Shaffer's Amadeus (1980), the
RSC's Nicholas Nickleby (1981), David
Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross (1984), and
Hampton's Les Liaisons dangereuses (1987).
