Shiels George [ George Morshiel], (1881–1949), Irish dramatist, who drew upon a wide knowledge of character and social relations in both parts of Ireland and in America for his realistic comedies. He made his name with the one-act
Bedmates (1921), his later sympathetic satires of contemporary life including
Paul Twyning (1922; London, 1933),
Professor Tim (1925; London, 1927), and
The New Gossoon (1930), seen in London in 1931, the title being subsequently altered to
The Girl on the Pillion. Shiels's serious plays, such as
The Passing Day (1936; London, 1951),
The Rugged Path (1940), and
The Summit (1941), showed that his dramatic gifts were not limited to comedy.
The Rugged Path, in particular, had an unprecedentedly long run at the
Abbey Theatre, where 22 of his plays were produced, and was also seen in England in 1953.
