Sher, Antony (1949– ), South African-born actor, who trained in London and then worked at the
Everyman, Liverpool,
Nottingham Playhouse, and the
Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh; in the West End; and at the
National Theatre ( Sam
Shepard's True West, 1982). After joining the
RSC as an associate artist he achieved a high reputation with a series of dangerous and unorthodox interpretations of Shakespeare: the Fool in
King Lear (1982), Richard III (1984), Malvolio in
Twelfth Night, and Shylock in
The Merchant of Venice (both 1987). Other roles for the RSC included the friar in Peter Barnes's
Red Noses (1985), set during the Black Death, and the title-role in Peter Flannery's
Singer (1989), about a Polish Jew who survives Auschwitz to become a slum landlord in post-war Britain. He scored a West End success in 1985 as a drag queen in Harvey Fierstein's three linked plays
Torch Song Trilogy.
