Servandony, Jean-Nicolas

Servandony, Jean-Nicolas (1695–1766), French scenic artist, born in Lyons, who in an effort to appear fashionably Italian changed the spelling of his name to Servandoni. After studying in Italy, he worked there and in other European countries, and was one of the first to adopt the neo-classic style in reaction against the universally popular baroque. He then settled in Paris, where he assumed control of the Salle des Machines. The influence of the work he did there in a series of spectacular productions was soon apparent in Germany and even in Italy. Later he worked in Dresden and Vienna, and in 1749 was in London, where he married.
