Semenova, Ekaterina Semenovna (1786–1849), Russian actress, whose main triumphs were in the tragedies of Shakespeare, Racine (particularly Phèdre), and Schiller. The daughter of a serf, she was sent at 10 years of age to the Theatre School in St Petersburg (Leningrad), and seven years later made her formal début, attracting attention by her acting in the somewhat frigid tragedies of Vladislav Ozerov (1770–1816). She made a great impression on her contemporaries by her beauty and her superb contralto voice, and Pushkin dedicated some of his poems to her.
