Scapino, one of the
zanni or servant roles of the
commedia dell'arte. Like
Brighella, Scapino was crafty and unprincipled, and when in danger lived up to his name, which means ‘to run off’ or ‘to escape’. The first actor to play him was Francesco Gabrielli (?–1654), who was in the company which went with the younger
Andreini to Paris in 1624. Through him and later actors of the part it passed into French comedy to end up as the quick-witted and unscrupulous valet of
Molière's Les Fourberies de Scapin (1671).
