Samson, Joseph-Isidore

Samson, Joseph-Isidore (1793–1871), French actor, who entered the Conservatoire at 16, and subsequently spent several years in the provinces. In 1819 he appeared in Paris at the opening of the new Odéon theatre, and made such a good impression that he was retained as leading man until 1826, when the Comédie-Française claimed him. Apart from a few years at the Palais-Royal, he remained there until his retirement in 1863. A handsome man, with a fine profile and a mass of curly hair, he was accounted a good actor, and also one of the finest teachers of acting at the Conservatoire where he remained on the staff until his death; it is as the teacher of Rachel that he is now chiefly remembered. By instructing her in the classical tradition, which he himself had inherited from Talma, he contributed to the revival of French tragedy with which Rachel was associated.
