Sadovsky, Prov Mikhailovich [ Prov Mikhailovich Yermilov] (1818–72), Russian actor, who first appeared on the provincial stage in Tula at the age of 14 and in 1839 joined the company at the
Maly Theatre in Moscow, coming to the fore in
Ostrovsky's plays, of whose comic roles he proved to be the ideal interpreter. Unlike
Karatygin and
Mochalov, he followed
Shchepkin in a realistic approach to his art and was largely responsible for keeping Ostrovsky's plays in the repertory until they won public acceptance.
