Ruiz de Alarcón y Mendoza, Juan (1580–1639), dramatist of Spain's Golden Age, rival and enemy of Lope de
Vega Carpio. Born in Mexico City, he went to Spain in 1600 and attained eminence in the law and politics. A hunchback, embittered by the ridicule attracted by his deformity in an age without pity, he retaliated by making the admirable hero of one of his best plays,
Las paredes oyen (
Walls Have Ears, 1617), similarly afflicted. Much of his work, satirical, well constructed, and with some excellent character-drawing, was more popular abroad than in his own country;
La verdad sospechosa (
Truth Itself Suspect), probably his best-known play, about a young man so given to lying that when he speaks the truth he is not believed, was the source of Corneille's
Le Menteur (1644) and
Goldoni's Il Bugiardo (
The Liar, 1750). The former provided the plot for Steele's
The Lying Lover;
or,
The Ladies' Friendship (1703), on which
Foote based his comedy
The Liar (1762).
