Royal Theatre (Kongelige Teater), Copenhagen, Denmark's national theatre. The original building, designed for the
Danske Skueplads and completed in 1748, was extensively altered and enlarged in 1773. The present building, close to the original site in Kongens Nytorv, dates from 1874. In the late 19th century it achieved a European reputation as the theatre most closely associated with
Ibsen. Poul
Reumert and Mogens
Wieth were closely associated with the theatre. There are several annexe theatres, and a travelling company regularly tours the provinces. In 1987 the theatre staged a production of
Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest directed by Clifford
Williams and designed by Carl
Toms.
