Rowley, Samuel

Rowley, Samuel (c.1575–1624), English actor and dramatist, a member of the Admiral's Men, whom he joined in 1597. He is credited with having a hand in writing a number of lost plays which preceded, and possibly provided material for, some of Shakespeare's. Rowley's only extant play, a chronicle drama on the life of Henry VIII, is entitled When You See Me, You Know Me (1603). He is believed to have altered Marlowe's Dr Faustus for Henslowe, mainly by adding some inferior comic passages for a revival in 1601.
