Rossi, Ernesto Fortunato Giovanni Maria

Rossi, Ernesto Fortunato Giovanni Maria (1827–96), Italian actor, who excelled in tragedy. As a young boy he acted with a children's company which played in private houses and made his professional début at the age of 18 in his birthplace, Livorno (Leghorn). He later joined the company of Gustavo Modena, and in 1852 played opposite Adelaide Ristori, with whom he went to Paris in 1855. Although his Othello was later eclipsed by that of Salvini, he was the first Italian actor to play the part, in Milan in 1856; he also played Hamlet and was considered good as Lear, though his interpretations of Shakespeare did not meet with approval in England or America.
