Rojas Villandrando, Agustín de

Rojas Villandrando, Agustín de (c.1572–1625), Spanish actor and dramatist, who was for a short time a strolling player, and wrote entertainingly of his experiences in a picaresque novel El viaje entretenido (The Entertaining Journey), published in 1603. In addition to a number of his own short playlets, or loas, this contains also a good deal of information on the early days of the Spanish theatre, and was not without influence on other European writers, notably Scarron (in Le Roman comique, 1651) and Goethe (in Wilhelm Meister, 1821). No English or other translations are available.
