Richelieu, Armand-Jean du Plessis de, Cardinal

Richelieu, Armand-Jean du Plessis de, Cardinal (1585–1642), French statesman, for many years the virtual ruler of France. He did a great deal for the theatre, and by his patronage of Montdory helped to establish a permanent professional playhouse in Paris and to raise the status of the actor. He had strong leanings towards dramatic authorship, and set up a company of five, including Corneille and Rotrou, to write plays under his direction. They were not very successful, and Corneille resigned after a disagreement over his share of the plot. Richelieu built a very well-equipped theatre in his palace which was first used in 1641 and later, as the Palais-Royal, became famous under Molière.
