Republic Theatre, New York, on West 42nd Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues. Built by the first Oscar Hammerstein, this opened in 1900 with James A.
Herne in his own play
Sag Harbor, in which the young Lionel
Barrymore made his first appearance in New York. In 1902 the theatre was taken over by David
Belasco, who named it after himself and produced there several of his own plays, including
The Darling of the Gods (1902),
Sweet Kitty Bellairs (1903),
Adrea, and
The Girl of the Golden West (both 1905). He also produced
Klein's The Music Master (1904), in which
Warfield made a great success, and Tully's
The Rose of the Rancho (1906). When in 1910 Belasco's second theatre, the Stuyvesant, was renamed the
Belasco, the Republic reverted to its original name. The last play to be seen there, before it became a
burlesque house in 1931 and then a cinema named the Victory in 1942, was John Huston's
Frankie and Johnny (1930).
