Realistic Theatre

Realistic Theatre, Moscow, small theatre, also known as the Krasnya Presnya Theatre from the district in which it was situated. It opened in 1921 and was originally one of the studios attached to the Moscow Art Theatre, on whose methods its early productions were based. A decisive change in its history came with the appointment in 1930 of Okhlopkov as its Artistic Director. His experimental techniques, while interesting and valuable, had necessarily a limited appeal, and in 1938 an unsuccessful attempt was made to merge the company with that of Taïrov at the Kamerny Theatre. Okhlopkov then went to the Theatre of the Revolution (later the Mayakovsky Theatre) and the Realistic was closed.
