Queen Henrietta's Men, company of players, usually known as the Queen's Men, formed on the accession of Charles I in 1625 and placed under the direct patronage of his wife. It was headed by Christopher
Beeston, and included several other members of the disbanded
Queen Anne's Men, to which it was in some ways a successor. Among the successful plays given by this company at their theatre the
Cockpit were about 20 which their official dramatist James
Shirley wrote for them, either alone or in collaboration, between 1625 and 1636. They also appeared at Court in Thomas
Heywood's masque Love's Mistress (1634), for which Inigo
Jones designed some excellent scenery. When plague closed the theatres in 1636 the company was disbanded, and replaced at the Cockpit by Beeston's Boys, but a new company under the old name was formed in 1637 and played successfully at
Salisbury Court until the closing of the theatres in 1642.
