Possart, Ernst von

Possart, Ernst von (1841–1921), German actor and theatre manager, who made his first appearance on the stage at Breslau in 1860, playing lago in Othello. His later roles included Shylock in The Merchant of Venice, Franz Moor in Schiller's Die Räuber, Mephistopheles in Goethe's Faust and Carlos in his Clavigo, and the title-role in Lessing's Nathan der Weise. In 1864 Possart was in Munich, where he became manager of the theatre in 1875, and well known for his productions of Shakespeare and Schiller with enormous casts in opulent sets. A fine-looking man, with an alert, intelligent face and flashing eyes, he was noted for the beauty of his voice and the dignity and ease of his movements. He was seen in New York in 1910, with much success.
