Pit, The

Pit, The, the RSC's second theatre in the Barbican Centre, so called because of its basement location. Successor to The Warehouse (see DONMAR WAREHOUSE), it has flexible seating for up to 200. Notable productions which originated there include Arthur Miller's The Archbishop's Ceiling (1986), Vladimir Gubaryev's Sarcophagus (1987), Howard Barker's The Bite of the Night (1988), and Sophocles' Electra and Richard Nelson's Some Americans Abroad (both 1989).
