Philipe, Gérard (1922–59), French actor, who studied at the Paris Conservatoire, and made his début in 1943 in Giraudoux's Sodome et Gomorrhe, first attracting attention in 1945 in the title-role of Camus's Caligula. In 1951, by which time he had made an outstanding reputation both on stage and screen, he joined the Théâtre National Populaire (TNP) under Vilar and gave a superb performance as the hero of Corneille's Le Cid. He continued to act for the TNP until his sudden death at 37 (he was buried in the costume he wore as Le Cid), and his fame and popularity did much to attract a young audience. Among the plays in which he appeared in Paris, at the Avignon Festival, and on tour in Russia, the USA, and Canada, were Kleist's Prinz Friedrich von Homburg (1951), Musset's Lorenzaccio (1952), Hugo's Ruy Blas, and Shakespeare's Richard II (both 1954). In 1958 and 1959 he was seen in Les Caprices de Marianne and On ne badine pas avec l'amour, both by Musset. He also played Eilif in the first French production of Brecht's Mother Courage (1951).
