Pepys, Samuel (1633–1703), English naval administrator under Charles II and James II, whose
Diary contains a good deal of information on the London theatre in the early days of the Restoration. In it he recorded the plays he saw and the actors in them, noted his opinion of them, and related stray items of backstage gossip retailed to him by his friends in the theatre, of whom one of the closest was Mary
Knepp. To him we owe many illuminating glimpses of the green room, of the theatre under reconstruction, and of the rowdy talkative audiences of his day.
