Palladio, Andrea (1518–80), Italian architect. Born Andrea di Pietro, the name by which he is now known (taken from Pallas Athene) was bestowed on him by his patron in recognition of his genius. It has in turn given its name to the Palladian style of architecture, based on the principles of classical antiquity as Palladio, under the influence of
Vitruvius, interpreted them in his buildings. Inigo
Jones, a pupil and admirer of Palladio, brought his ideas to the notice of English architects, influencing both theatre and public buildings throughout the land. One of Palladio's greatest though least fruitful achievements was the
Teatro Olimpico, which was finished after his death by his pupil
Vincenzo Scamozzi (1552–1616).
