Otway, Thomas (1652–85), English dramatist, who in 1670 made his first and last appearance on the stage in Aphra
Behn's The Forced Marriage. He then turned to playwriting, and in 1675 produced
Alcibiades, a successful tragedy which provided a fine part for Mrs
Barry, with whom he was madly in love. It was followed by
Don Carlos (1676), a tragedy in rhymed verse, a comedy entitled
Friendship in Fashion (1678), and by his two finest works,
The Orphan;
or,
The Unhappy Marriage (1680) and
Venice Preserv'd; or,
A Plot Discovered (1682), tragedies in which
Betterton and Mrs Barry appeared together. Both plays were frequently revived during the 18th century.
The Orphan was last seen in London in 1925, and
Venice Preserv'd, which continued in favour during the 19th century, was given a splendid production in 1953 with
Gielgud and
Scofield. One of Otway's most successful plays in his own day was his translation of
Molière's Les Fourberies de Scapin. As
The Cheats of Scapin, this was produced at
Dorset Garden as an
after-piece to his
Titus and Berenice (1676) (based on
Racine). Other works were a comedy,
The Soldier's Fortune, first seen at
Drury Lane in 1680, and its sequel,
The Atheist; or,
The Second Part of the Soldier's Fortune (1683). His best work shows great depth and sincerity.
