Other Place, The, the
RSC's studio theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, which opened in 1974. A corrugated ‘tin hut’ converted from a rehearsal space, it seated 140 and presented plays in
repertory. Its programmes, which consisted of both new plays and classic works, included some notable small-scale productions of Shakespeare, among them
Macbeth in 1976 (directed by Trevor
Nunn),
Pericles in 1979,
Timon of Athens in 1980, and
Othello (Trevor Nunn), in 1989. Revivals of rarely performed plays included Ford's
Perkin Warbeck in 1975 and
'Tis Pity She's a Whore in 1977; Beaumont and
Fletcher's A Maid's Tragedy in 1980; and
Farquhar's The Twin Rivals and Ford,
Dekker, and Rowley's
The Witch of Edmonton in 1981. (Productions of this type are now staged at The
Swan.) New plays such as David Edgar's
Destiny (1976), Pam Gems's
Queen Christina (1977) and her musical
Piaf (1978), Christopher
Hampton's Les Liaisons dangereuses (1984), and Doug Lucie's
Fashion (1987) were premièred there. The theatre closed in 1989 and a new brick-built Other Place, seating 289, opened on a different site in 1991.

What would Bismarck do? In the Balkans, 1914 is never far away.(Europe)(Otto von Bismarck)
Magazine article from: The American Conservative; 3/24/2008; ; 700+ words
; There is an old saying that the problem with the Balkans is that they produce more history than they can consume locally. Events in, and over, the Serbian province of Kosovo may soon give this adage new relevance. Last month, an Albanian government in Kosovo declared its independence from Serbia.

NATO vote a step worthy of praise; Russia shouldn't be underestimated The Journal Sentinel's May 4 editorial opposition to NATO expansion said: "That would really drive Russia up the wall. . . . And for what? Russia poses no military threat to anyone." That is simply shortsighted. That strategist of Weltpolitik German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck once stated: "Russia is never as strong or as weak as it appears to be." Though this year marks the centenary of his death, I would suggest that his comment stands no less true than when he said it. Robert S. Roesler Muskego

; On April 30, the U.S. Senate took a historically significant and bipartisan action in voting 80-19 to admit Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary into the NATO alliance. The Polish American Congress, in Wisconsin and nationally, has worked long and hard for this action, which we believe is in
