Neilson, Julia Emilie (1868–1957), English actress, wife of Fred
Terry, whom she married while they were both appearing in Henry Arthur
Jones's The Dancing Girl (1891), in which Julia scored a sensational success. From 1900 until Fred's retirement in 1929 she played opposite him. Originally intended for a musical career, she was studying at the Royal Academy of Music when she was persuaded by W. S.
Gilbert to go on the stage, her first appearances being in revivals of several of his plays. One of her outstanding performances before becoming her husband's leading lady was as Hester Worsley in Oscar
Wilde's A Woman of No Importance (1893), and she was also much admired as Princess Flavia in George
Alexander's production of Anthony Hope's
The Prisoner of Zenda (1896). After Fred's death in 1932 she was seen with Seymour
Hicks in his
Vintage Wine (1934), and in 1938 she celebrated her stage jubilee. After some years in retirement she made a final appearance in 1944.
