Music Box, New York, on West 45th Street between Broadway and 8th Avenue. Built by Irving Berlin and Sam H. Harris (see SAM H. HARRIS THEATRE) and seating 1,010, this theatre opened in 1921 with the Music Box Revue which ran into four editions. After a further series of revues came Kaufman and Hart's Once in a Lifetime (1930) and Of Thee I Sing (1931), a collaboration between Kaufman and Morris Ryskind. Other successes were Kaufman and Ferber's Dinner at Eight (1932), Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men (1937), The Man Who Came to Dinner (1939), again by Kaufman and Hart, and I Remember Mama (1944) by John Van Druten. After Kurt Weill's musical Lost in the Stars (1949) the theatre reverted to straight plays including Inge's Picnic (1953), Rattigan's Separate Table; (1956), and Rashomon (1959), based on a play by Akutagawa. Four productions from London were Anthony Shaffer's Sleuth (1970), Ayckbourn's Absurd Person Singular (1974), Trevor Griffiths's Comedians (1976), and the musical Side by Side by Sondheim (1977). Ira Levin's Deathtrap (1978), with John Wood, continued into the 1980s, and was followed by such plays as Kopit's End of the World (1984) and Hampton's Les Liaisons dangereuses (1987).
