Mountfort, William (1664–92), English actor, who specialized in ‘fine gentlemen’ parts, being an excellent Sparkish in
Wycherley's The Country Wife and creating the title-role in John Crowne's
Sir Courtly Nice;
or,
It Cannot Be (1685). He was also the author of several plays, including a
harlequinade ‘in the Italian Manner’,
The Life and Death of Doctor Faustus … With the Humours of Harlequin and Scaramouche (1685), and a comedy,
Greenwich Park (1691), which was extremely successful and frequently revived. He was brutally murdered at the instigation of a certain Captain Hill, who suspected him of being a successful rival in the affections of Mrs
Bracegirdle, with whom Hill was passionately but unsuccessfully in love.
