Moscow State Jewish Theatre, known in Yiddish as Melucha, and in Russian as Goset. This theatre was founded in Leningrad in 1919 by
Alexander Granovsky [
Abraham Ozark] (1890–1937) as the Jewish Theatre Studio for the production of plays in Yiddish; it later moved to Moscow, opening at the small Chagall Hall in 1921 in a programme of short comedy sketches by Sholom
Aleichem, and finally achieved its own theatre, seating 766. Granovsky was succeeded in 1927, during a European tour, by his leading actor Salomon
Mikhoels, who continued much of Granovsky's work with the addition of new plays by such authors as
David Bergelson (1884–1952) and Peretz Markish. The leading stage designer at this theatre was for some time Isaac Rabinovich, who later worked for the
Vakhtangov and
Maly theatres, and one of its artistic directors was
Radlov. After Mikhoels's death in 1948 the company disbanded.
