Montdory

Montdory [ Guillaume Desgilberts] (1594–1651), French actor, the friend and interpreter of Corneille, whose Rodrigue in Le Cid (1636) he was the first to play. A good business man, he built up a fine company at the Marais in the face of much hostility, training and directing his actors well. Among them were the parents of Michel Baron, first leading man of the Comédie-Française. Montdory, who was an excellent actor in the old declamatory style, seldom appeared in comedy and never in farce. He was at his best in tragedy, one of his finest roles being Herod in Tristan's La Mariane (1636).
