Moncrieff, William George Thomas (1794–1857), English dramatist and theatre manager, author of about 200 plays, mainly burlesques and melodramas written for the minor theatres. The most successful was Tom and Jerry; or, Life in London (1821), the best of many adaptations of the book by Pierce Egan. In 1823 Moncrieff's The Cataract of the Ganges was produced at Drury Lane with the added attraction of real water. He adapted Dickens's Pickwick Papers for the stage as Sam Weller; or, The Pickwickians (1837) almost before the last instalment had appeared, which aroused the anger of the author, who satirized him as ‘the literary gentleman’ in Nicholas Nickleby (1838).
