Mochalov, Pavel Stepanovich (1800–45), Russian tragic actor, the leading exponent in Moscow of the ‘intuitive’ school of acting. He made his début in 1817, and was soon playing leading roles, his finest parts being Hamlet, King Lear, and the heroes of Schiller's Die Räuber and Kabale und Liebe. With great gifts of temperament and passion, Mochalov was antipathetic to any rational method, relying entirely on inspiration and so being extremely uneven in his acting and in his effect on his audiences. With the advance of realism his romantic appeal became out of date, and when heavy drinking impaired his powers of concentration and weakened the flow of inspiration, he had no technique to fall back on. His influence persisted for a time, but was eventually to succumb to the reforms of Shchepkin, which he had resisted to the end.
