Mirren, Helen (1946– ), English actress, one of the most glamorous and talented of her generation. Her early appearances with the National Youth Theatre led to her playing an extremely youthful Cleopatra, in Antony and Cleopatra, at the Old Vic in 1965. Two years later she joined the RSC, remaining with it for five seasons, her roles including Cressida in Troilus and Cressida, Ophelia in Hamlet, Tatyana in Gorky's Enemies, and the title-role in Strindberg's Miss Julie. After working with the International Centre of Theatre Research she played Lady Macbeth for the RSC in 1974, and a year later was seen at the Royal Court in David Hare's Teeth ‘n’ Smiles, in which she gave an outstanding performance as an alcoholic singer with a rock group. In complete contrast were her excellent Nina in Chekhov's The Seagull and Ella in Ben Travers's farce The Bed before Yesterday (both 1975). She returned to the RSC in 1977 in the three parts of Henry VI, and was seen as Isabella in Measure for Measure at the Riverside Studios (1979) and in the title-role of Webster's The Duchess of Malfi with the Royal Exchange Theatre company (1980; Round House, 1981). In 1981 she also appeared in Brian Friel's Faith Healer at the Royal Court Theatre, and in 1983 for the RSC she again played Cleopatra. She was absent for several years in films before returning to London in Arthur Miller's double bill Two-Way Mirror (1989).
