Mezzetino

Mezzetino, Mezzetin, servant of the commedia dell'arte, with many of the characteristics of Brighella or Scapino, though more polished. Towards the end of the 17th century (c.1682) the role was altered and elaborated by Angelo Costantini, who adopted red and white as the distinguishing colours of his costume as opposed to the green and white stripes of Scapino. The character passed into the French theatre by way of the Comédie-Italienne; one of the finest French Mezzetins was the actor Préville of the Comédie-Française, who was painted by Van Loo in the part.
