McCormick, F. J.

McCormick, F. J. [ Peter Judge] (1891–1947), Irish actor, considered the most versatile and intelligent player of character parts ever to appear at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, where he was first seen in 1918, and remained (except for a brief period in 1921–2) until his death. Among the many roles he created were Seumas Shields in The Shadow of a Gunman (1923), Joxer Daly in Juno and the Paycock (1924), and Jack Clitheroe in The Plough and the Stars (1926), all by Sean O'Casey; Oedipus in Yeats's versions of Sophocles' Oedipus the King (1928) and Oedipus at Colonus (1934), and the leading role in The King of the Great Clock Tower (1935), also by Yeats; and the title-role in George Shiels's Professor Tim (1925).
