Martinelli, Drusiano

Martinelli, Drusiano (?–1606/8) and Tristano (c.1557–1630), Italian actors. Drusiano may have been a member of the first commedia dell'arte troupe which visited England, in 1577–8. He was a good actor, but eclipsed by the excellence of his wife Angelica Alberigi, who with her husband directed a company known as the Uniti. Tristano, who is believed to have been the first actor to play Arlecchino, is first found as a member of the Confidenti, but appears to have been of a restless and quarrelsome disposition, and is found with many different groups. He was very popular in Paris, where he appeared on several occasions.
