Mantle, Robert Burns (1873–1948), American dramatic critic, who in 1898 became dramatic editor of the
Denver Times. Later he worked as Sunday editor of the
Chicago Tribune, and from 1922 until his retirement in 1943 he was dramatic critic of the
New York Daily News. He edited till his death a series of play anthologies which began in 1920 with
The Best Plays of 1919–1920; each volume contains extracts from 10 of the season's productions, together with an annotated index of every play produced in New York and at leading regional theatres during the year. It was supplemented by three more volumes covering the years 1894 to 1919. This useful chronicle of the modern American theatre continues with the subtitle
The Burns Mantle Theater Yearbook. Mantle was also the author of
American Playwrights of To-Day (1935) and co-edited
A Treasury of the Theatre (1938).
