Maly Theatre, Leningrad, seating 460, is situated in a turn-of-the-century block of flats. Founded in 1944, when most other theatre companies had been evacuated during the siege of Leningrad, it presented a wide range of plays. The company now comprises around 50 actors with a repertory of 15 plays and giving 500 performances a year in Leningrad and the surrounding towns and villages. In 1988 it took its production of Alexander Galin's
Stars in the Morning Sky to Glasgow and London, its first visit to the West, which was followed by visits to New York and Paris. The company returned to Glasgow in 1990 (London, 1991) with
Brothers and Sisters, a two-part play based on a trilogy of novels by Fyodor Abramov.
