Mahelot

Mahelot, scenic designer, scene painter, and director at the theatre of the Hôtel de Bourgogne in Paris, whose Mémoire, now in the Bibliothèque Nationale, contains notes on and sketches for the settings of plays performed at the theatre in 1633 and 1634, at a time when the old multiple setting derived from the liturgical drama was giving way to the single set of French classical comedy and tragedy. It also gives valuable information on about 71 published plays, and the titles and dates of many unpublished which might otherwise have remained unknown. From the Mémoire, which was continued by Laurent, it has been possible to reconstruct some of the settings made for specific plays, among them Pyramus et Thisbé by Théophile.
