Maddermarket Theatre

Maddermarket Theatre, Norwich, replica of an Elizabethan theatre interior built inside a former chapel in 1921 by Nugent Monck (1877–1958) to house the Norwich Players, an amateur company which he founded in 1911. It was altered and enlarged in 1953 and again in 1966 and now holds about 300. Monck, whose career had begun as stage-manager for William Poel, directed most of the Maddermarket productions himself until 1952. Since its inception the company, still amateur, has staged all 37 of the plays associated with Shakespeare, as well as the full range of British and world drama from ancient Greek to the present day. A new production is put on every month for nine performances, the actors by tradition appearing anonymously.
