MacLeish, Archibald (1892–1982), American poet and dramatist, who continued the attempts made by Maxwell
Anderson to write plays in poetry adapted to the rhythms of everyday American speech. He had a distinguished career as a poet and lecturer on poetry, but is best remembered in the theatre for
J. B., a retelling of the story of Job in modern terms which was seen on Broadway (1958), in London (1961), and in many European countries. Though not wholly successful in portraying living people in terms of a cosmic myth, it nevertheless has moments of authentic tragedy; it was awarded the
Pulitzer Prize for drama. An earlier play,
Panic, was staged on Broadway in 1935.
