Lyndsay, Sir David (1490–
c.1554), Scottish poet, and the author of the only surviving example of a Scottish medieval
morality play Ane Pleasant Satyre of the Thrie Estaitis. First performed at Cupar in 1552 in the presence of James V, this was a serious attack on the established Church and the authority of the Pope, interspersed with comic episodes highlighting clerical follies and abuses of the time. The complete play, which was added to and revised in 1554, is very long, but an abbreviated and modernized version was successfully produced at the
Edinburgh Festival in 1948 under the direction of Tyrone
Guthrie and has since been revived several times.
