Leybourne, George

Leybourne, George [ Joe Saunders] (1842–84), famous music-hall star. He gained his initial experience in the ‘free-and-easys’ of provincial and East End taverns, and after appearing in one or two minor London halls was engaged for the Canterbury, probably about 1865. Tall and handsome, always immaculately dressed as a ‘man-about-town’, with monocle, whiskers, and a fur-collared coat, he represented the second generation of music-hall entertainers, whose ‘heavy swell’ was a complete contrast to the working-class characters of their predecessors. Unfortunately Leybourne's nickname of ‘Champagne Charlie’ was well deserved, and his last years were a constant struggle with disillusionment and ill health. He made his last appearance at the Queen's in Poplar shortly before his death.
