Lescarbot, Marc

Lescarbot, Marc (c.1570–1642), French lawyer, author of the first play to be performed in Canada, which he directed himself. This was a marine masque, Le Théâtre de Neptune en la Nouvelle France, seen in 1606 at Port Royal, Acadia (today Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia). Lescarbot had been persuaded by a friend to accompany him to New France. He served there as an instructor in religious matters, and was left in charge of the settlement when his friend and a companion went on an exploratory trip to the south. He prepared the masque to welcome them home. Subsequently he returned to France to resume his legal career. In 1609 he published a collection of poems and writings, Les Muses de la Nouvelle France, that contained the script of Le Théâtre de Neptune, which in 1611 was translated into English and published in London.
