Lawrence, Gertrude [ Gertrude Klasen] (1898–1952), English actress, who trained under Italia Conti and made her first appearance in pantomime at the age of 12. Continuing her career uninterruptedly, mainly as a dancer and later as a leading lady in revue, she appeared in several editions of Charlot's Revue in London and New York in 1924–5, and was seen as Kay in the musical Oh, Kay! (NY, 1926; London, 1927). She made her first outstanding success as Amanda Prynne in Noël Coward's Private Lives (1930; NY, 1931) with Coward himself as her leading man, appearing with him again in his To-Night at 8.30 (London and NY, 1936). After playing in New York in the latter she remained there for some time, starring in Rachel Crothers's Susan and God (1937), Moss Hart and Kurt Weill's musical Lady in the Dark (1941 and 1943), and a revival of Shaw's Pygmalion in 1945. She returned to London in Daphne Du Maurier's September Tide (1948), but was back in New York in 1951 starring in Rodgers and Hammerstein's The King and I when she became ill, dying shortly afterwards.
